This may be a bit different from other, step oriented posts, but I think it's important in terms of how we perceive this service:
Do you have any future plans for this tutoring website? You said you were an M4, so you don't have much time until you leave for residency, right? I can't say I know Alyssa's future plans, so I'm wondering why she put so much work into web development, etc when this is most likely going to be a one shot, one year "hop in hop out" sort of thing?
This is a great question. I’m actually on a research year until June 2019 (I have a weird schedule where I finished almost all of 4th year before starting on research). I’m actually planning to continue the company throughout residency and beyond. Although I disagree with many of Alec from Yousmle’s strategies (though we agree on the importance of making your own Anki cards), he is an example of someone who has continued a tutoring company during residency (albeit one that charges $375 an hour for individual tutoring).
I feel there really needs to be an alternative to Yousmle, Med School Tutors, and Med School Coach, who charge over $250 an hour and pay tutors only a small fraction of that. They also offer no guidance or quality control, whereas we have extensive tutoring guidelines and supportive communication between all the tutors in our group.
We have had a wonderful response so far and are in the process of adding several tutors to meet demand. Our eventual goal is to create a program that provides subsidized tutoring to need-based financial aid recipients, as I feel it is not fair for only the relatively wealthy to be able to receive tutoring. I already do this for a few students I knew before starting the company, and am hoping to expand it as the company grows. This free advice forum is in the spirit of that goal.
